
Snow in the air and snow on the dish are different problems. Falling flakes can share the radio path with any other precipitation. A cap of snow or ice sitting on the face of the terminal is an obstruction. Starlink’s Snow Melt function exists to deal with that second problem: it lets the dish use extra power so the surface can warm and shed snow.

Snow on the dish versus snow in the weather
A winter day can be snowy and still leave the face of the dish mostly clear, especially if the terminal is already warm and mounted so water can run off. The opposite also happens: a modest snowfall sticks, freezes, and leaves a white lid after the sky has quieted.
When the face is covered, satellites are not the first thing to blame. The dish cannot see. The Starlink app may show obstructions, a search state, or a poor session that tracks the snow cap rather than the forecast icon.
Wet snow and ice are harder than dry powder. Powder often slides. Wet snow packs. Freezing rain can glaze the surface so that extra heat has more work to do. If the event is a blizzard with wind and a power cut, you are in storm territory as well as a Snow Melt problem.
Mounting angle matters. Starlink’s kit documentation tells you to install so water can shed. A dish left in a snowbank, set too flat in a hollow, or aimed into a drift will fight Snow Melt all winter. Heat cannot substitute for a site that buries the terminal.
What Snow Melt is for
Snow Melt is a Starlink dish setting. It is not a TNET control, and it is not a separate heater accessory you order for most kits. In ordinary operation the terminal already produces heat. Snow Melt governs whether the system may draw additional power so that heat is enough to melt snow and ice off the face.
Starlink documents the control in its Help Center article How do I adjust snow melt mode?. Open that article on an account that matches your country if the link routes you through a regional help center. The app is still the source of truth for the labels on your kit.
What you should expect conceptually, without treating unofficial blog names as gospel:
- You can usually leave extra melting off to save power. That is relevant off-grid, on a small inverter, or in a climate that never sees snow.
- You can usually let the dish respond when the face needs to clear — the everyday winter setting for a home on reliable power.
- You can often warm the dish ahead of a known snowfall if you have the power budget and the app offers that kind of option.
Do not assume every hardware generation shows the same menu. Mini, Standard, and Performance kits are not interchangeable. If Snow Melt is missing, you may be in the app without a direct connection to the Starlink network, or your terminal may expose the function differently. Connect to the Starlink Wi-Fi (or the kit’s documented management path) and look under the dish or Starlink settings. If it is still absent, use Starlink support for that serial number rather than a generic tutorial.
Starlink publishes kit-specific figures such as environmental ratings and, for some products, snow-melt capability. Those numbers live on Starlink specifications and in kit durability guides. They are not universal. This article will not invent wattage, melt rates, or mode names that your app does not show.
How to use it in practice
Before winter, not during the first whiteout. Find the setting on a calm day. Note what the app calls each option. Note whether your power supply and cable run are already warm to the touch in normal use — that is useful context later, not a diagnostic by itself.
On grid power in snow country. Keep Snow Melt available through the season. If the app offers a pre-storm or pre-heat style option, use it when you have confidence a sticky snowfall is coming and you need the link to stay up. Turn that aggressive option back down when the event has passed so you are not paying for extra draw on a clear week.
Off-grid, RV, or a small inverter. Extra melt power is a budget item. If the inverter is already near its limit, enabling an aggressive melt option can brown out the system and take the router with it. Read the live power draw in the Starlink app if your kit shows it. Size the inverter and battery from Starlink’s published power ranges for your dish, not from a forum average. If you must choose between melting and staying up at a lower draw, plan the day: melt while the generator is running, then return to a thriftier setting.
When snow is already on the dish. Give the terminal time after you enable a more active option. Packed snow and ice do not vanish in a few seconds. If the dish is in a drift, shovel the drift so the terminal is not a snow sculpture. Do not expect Snow Melt to excavate a burial.
Mini and travel kits. Do not assume a compact terminal has the same melt authority as a larger dish. Check the app. If the kit cannot keep up with a wet dump, you may need to bring the terminal into a dry space, clear it, and set it back out — only when that is safe and consistent with Starlink’s handling guidance.
Safe clearing
The safest clear is the one the dish does for itself.
If you must help:
- Wait for a lull. Do not climb a roof in wind, ice, or active lightning. If the dish is not reachable from the ground, leave it alone.
- Use a soft, dry tool: a gloved hand, a soft brush, or a plastic snow brush. No metal scrapers, no screwdriver, no pressure washer, no boiling water on a frozen face.
- Support the mount. Do not yank the mast or twist the terminal to “knock it off.”
- Clear around the base so meltwater has somewhere to go and so a refreeze does not lock the cable in a block of ice.
- Watch the cable. Ice dams and icicles can pull or pinch it.
If ice is bonded to the face, let Snow Melt work. Forcing ice off can damage the surface or the mount. Damage from improvised clearing is a hardware problem, not a weather-model problem.
Common mistakes
Covering the dish to “keep snow off.” A lid is an obstruction. The terminal needs the sky more than it needs a cozy hat.
Turning the whole kit off to save power during the storm you needed it for. A cold, snow-covered dish will not magically be ready when you power it at 8:00 a.m. for a call. If you load-shed, do it on a schedule you chose, then allow time to melt and acquire before you need the link.
Leaving Snow Melt off all winter on grid power because someone said it “wears out the heater.” Follow Starlink’s guidance for your kit. There is not a consumer replaceable heating pad with a public duty-cycle rating in the Help Center article this page cites. Do not invent one.
Assuming Snow Melt fixes trees. Snow-loaded branches are obstructions. Melt on the dish will not lift a pine. After a heavy, wet snow, look at the canopy and the obstruction map. That is siting, covered in the bad-weather overview.
Using a high, whippy pole in ice country. Ice adds weight and wind area. If the mast nods, you have a mount problem that Snow Melt cannot solve.
Trusting unofficial wattage tables. Power draw changes with hardware, firmware, ambient temperature, and whether melt is active. The app and Starlink’s kit documents are the references. TNET will not publish a substitute table.
Treating TNET as a snow-depth or outage feed. The Connection Outlook can help you plan a winter window. It does not tell you that your roof is currently capped.
When Snow Melt is not the issue
If the sky is clear, the dish is dry, and the session is still poor, stop. You are in congestion, obstruction, Wi-Fi, cable, or account territory. Snow Melt will not raise a speed test.
If the house is dark, Snow Melt is irrelevant until power returns. A UPS sized for the router and dish can cover a short blink. It will not run an aggressive melt option through a long outage unless you designed the battery that way.
If rain is falling and the face is clean, you want the rain article, not a melt setting.
Practical checklist
- Find Snow Melt in the Starlink app on a calm day; write down the labels your kit actually shows.
- Read Starlink’s Help Center article on adjusting snow melt mode, and your kit’s specification page.
- Keep extra melt available on grid power in snow country; be conservative off-grid.
- Mount so water and slush can run off; do not bury the dish.
- Do not cover the terminal.
- Clear snow only from a safe position with a soft tool; never scrape ice with metal.
- After a dump, check trees and the mast as well as the face of the dish.
- Allow time to melt and acquire before a morning call.
