Does Starlink Work During Storms?

Often, yes — with a narrower meaning than the question suggests. A storm is not one failure mode. Wind loads the mount. A downpour affects the radio path. Lightning is a safety and surge problem. A power cut turns every healthy dish into a dark appliance. Those risks can arrive together, but they do not share a fix.

Starlink is outdoor equipment, and many households keep a usable session through ordinary thunderstorms. Severe weather can still interrupt the radio path, damage an exposed installation or cut its power. Four risks, not one “storm score”

Wind is mechanical. It shakes fasteners, flexes a tall mast, fatigues a cable at the drip loop, and in the worst cases can take the terminal off the roof. Connection symptoms — a brief search, a wobbling look angle — are secondary to whether the hardware is still attached. Downpour is radio and water. Heavy rain can degrade the path. Wet trees can become obstructions. Standing water can find a connector you installed without a drip loop. Lightning is a life-safety and electrical problem. A Starlink dish is not a lightning rod, a lightning detector, or a substitute for building protection. Do not go to the roof. Do not hold a metal mast. Follow local electrical code for grounding and surge protection; Starlink’s install materials and a licensed electrician are the references, not a connection forecast. Unplug indoor equipment only if you can do so safely and you accept that the internet will be down while it is unplugged.

Power cuts are the quiet killer of “did Starlink work during the storm?” stories. If the grid or the generator dies, the session dies. A UPS on the router and power supply covers a blink. Before the storm

Start with official weather. If NWS has issued a warning, that warning outranks any internet-planning page. Shelter, travel, and medical plans come first. Starlink is a convenience and a work tool. It is not a reason to stay in a bad structure.

If you have time and the weather is still ordinary:

  • Look at the dish from the ground. Is the mast vertical? Is the cable free, drip-looped, and not sawing on a shingle edge?
  • Open the Starlink app and review obstructions while you can still interpret them.
  • Confirm the indoor kit is off the floor in rooms that leak.
  • Charge laptops and phones. If you own a UPS, test that it actually carries the router.
  • Move immovable work earlier. A file you can upload tonight does not need to ride the worst hour tomorrow.
  • If a named wind event is coming and you cannot vouch for the mount, taking a portable terminal inside is a practical choice. Follow Starlink’s handling guidance. Do not invent a “hurricane mode.”

Check the Connection Outlook only as a planning view for a place and time — for example, whether tomorrow afternoon looks like a poorer window for a call. Do not wait on TNET for a tornado, flood, or severe-thunderstorm decision. Do not treat the outlook as a live map of whether Starlink is down in your county.

During the storm

Stay inside. Do not inspect the roof. Do not “aim the dish better” in wind.

Inside, keep the diagnostic short:

  1. Do you have household power?
  2. Are the router and dish power supply lit?
  3. Does the Starlink app show the terminal online?
  4. Does a laptop next to the router still reach the internet?

If power is gone, the rest is theater. If power is present and the dish is offline, wait unless you have a ground-level, safe reason to believe a GFCI tripped. If the dish is online and a wired client is merely slow or briefly unstable, that can be the downpour. Let the cell pass. Repeated reboots will not clear a thunderstorm.

If you hear the mount banging, that is a hardware emergency for after the wind drops, not a software setting. Get people away from windows if NWS or local officials say so. A failed bracket is a property problem. It is not worth a head injury to livestream.

Do not use Starlink, TNET, or social media as your warning radio. Keep an NOAA Weather Radio, a local alert, or the official NWS channels in the plan. When cellular and satellite are both messy, the low-tech path still matters.

After the storm

Wait until it is safe to walk the site.

Mount and mast. Vertical? Cracked brackets? Missing fasteners? New play at the joints? Starlink’s install guides tell you to tether against unexpected wind. If the tether did work, inspect it for abrasion. If the dish moved, do not assume the look angle is still valid. Recheck obstructions in the app after you secure the hardware.

Cable. Jacket cuts, pulled connectors, a drip loop that filled with ice and stretched. Replace damaged cable with the correct Starlink part. Do not splice a weatherboard with electrical tape and hope.

Trees. A new lean in the look angle is an obstruction even if the radio path through air has recovered.

Power. Reset GFCIs. Confirm the injector is dry. If you lost a supply, do not apply power to a soaked indoor kit.

Session. When the site is physically sound, test on Ethernet or next to the router. If the hop is still poor in fair air, you have left the storm. Look at congestion, account status, and hardware.

It will not warn you of a tornado. It will not replace NWS, local emergency management, or common sense. It will not rank your risk of a lightning strike. It will not claim affiliation with Starlink’s network operations.

What it can do, on a calmer day, is help you see whether a future window at a chosen place looks like a poorer time for a call or a transfer. That is the whole product claim. Keep it in that box.

Practical checklist

Prepare

  • Read NWS first; treat TNET as planning, never as a warning.
  • Inspect the mount, tether, and drip loop while the sky is still ordinary.
  • Confirm UPS or generator behavior on the actual Starlink load.
  • Shift critical uploads and calls earlier if you can.

During

  • Stay off the roof and away from masts.
  • Check power, then router lights, then the app, then one near-router client.
  • Do not reboot in a loop during a downpour.
  • Use official hazard alerts, not a connection tool.

After

  • Inspect mast, fasteners, tether, cable, and trees before you chase a software fix.
  • Recheck the obstruction view.
  • Test on a wired or near-router client once the site is safe.
  • Repair with official hardware guidance, not an unnamed bracket from a marketplace listing.

Plan the hour — after you respect the warning
